Here’s some info on Tugba Karademir, mostly from Wikipedia:

Tuğba Karademir, born on March 17, 1985 in Ankara, Turkey, is one of the few figure skaters in Turkey, and is currently considered to be her country’s best.

She started skating at the age of 5, with her kindergarten class, right after the very first ice rink opened in Turkey in 1990. At only 8 years old, Karademir competed for the first time internationally for Turkey. In 1995, she won a gold medal at a novice competition at the Balkan Games and a silver medal in the Netherlands.

After these successes, her parents decided to give her a chance and the family moved to Canada in 1996. There, she began training with Robert Tebby at the Mariposa School of Skating.

At the European Championship, held January 14-22, 2006 in France, she placed 13th.

Karademir participated as the first figure skater ever from Turkey at the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, and was the bearer of Turkey’s flag during the opening ceremony. She scored a personal best of 44.2 points in the short program. Combined with her 79.44 points in the free program, she placed 21st overall with a total of 123.64 points.
