Airline accident statistics - are we safer?
Published July 9th, 2006 in Misc Tags: accidents, air travel, airlines, flying.I personally think that aircraft builders, airlines, airports and governments are not doing enough to make significant advances in aviation safety. It seems to me that, excluding the latest electronics and avionics instruments available to pilots, your average passenger aircrafts ’safety features’ are essentially the same as 30 years ago.
That said, here’s some hard data for you to look at, which indicates that air travel has indeed been getting safer in the last 30 years. The following graph shows worldwide airline accident statistics between 1970-2004. (Click the graph to enlarge) The Y-axis on the left is number of fatalities per 1 million flights and the Y-axis on the right is number of fatal accidents per 1 million flights. The trend does seem to be going down, which is good news.

A comedian once said: THe black box is always recovered, always survives a crash.. Why don’t they make the whole plane out of the black box material??
Seriously, I hate to fly.. Compared against the unstoppable forces of weather and the hardness of earth, it’s like traveling in a pressurized beer can. Doesn’t take much to pierce the skin…
I agree. I get that feeling especially when I’m flying with small planes.
Hi, super blog. I am trying to start my own blog. What type of software do you use? Is there a ton of maintenance that goes along with it?. Thanks.
