2006 FIBA World Basketball Championship

The 2006 FIBA World Basketball Championship was held in Japan a few weeks ago. Spain got the gold medal, followed by Greece with the silver medal and the USA with the bronze. Next three countries in the rankings were Argentina, France and Turkey.

Turkish fans are looking forward to hosting the world’s most prestigious basketball event in 2010, after achieving the best ever international result in a FIBA World Championship. At only their second appearance, the Turkish team reached a historic 6th place at the 2006 FIBA World Championship. They claimed the 9th position in 2002 in Indianapolis.
In overall FIBA world rankings, Turkey climbed to 16th position, between Canada and Brazil. USA, Argentina and Spain are at the top of the rankings.
